Helping young people with SEND stay safe online
Staying safe when online is very important and young people with SEND can be particularly vulnerable.
Internet Matters have produced a series of guides for parents and carers to help and support young people with SEND to stay safe online. These guides can be found on their Supporting children and young people with SEND page (opens link in a new window).
They have guides with advice about:
- Connecting and sharing online (opens link in new window)
- Browsing safely online (opens link in new window)
- Staying safe while gaming (opens link in new window)
They also have a lot of guides about other online issues.
Stop It Now (opens link in new window) produced this guide to adult grooming (opens link in new window). Most of the people you meet online will be perfectly nice people. But this guide points out the warning signs that might indicate that someone isn’t who they say they are.
Ineque (opens link in new window) produced this guide to staying safe while using live streaming features on Instagram, YouTube, Twitch, and other platforms.
Please note: While this guide is clear, it seems to be written for a general audience, rather than specifically for people with learning disabilities.
Safety Centre have a series of one-page guides to staying safe on some of the most popular online platforms (including TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and others).
