A child or young person with SEND does NOT need to have an EHCP to get support in an education setting (school, college or nursery)
Every education setting has the responsibility to use their ‘best endeavours’ to make sure that a child with SEND gets the support they need. This can be via a few different levels of support, with the type of support being provided changing at each stage. This is called the Graduated Approach.
At each stage of the Graduated Approach an Assess , Plan, Do, Review cycle is followed, this tends to be more detailed as the level of support increases.
There are different levels of support available in education settings:
- SEND Support - This is more targeted, additional support. If a school decides that a child does have SEND, they will talk to parents/carers and the child about this and come up with a plan of what they are going to do. They will write this plan down and share it with all the child’s teachers and the parents/carers. There is no set way for schools to write these plans, most Kirklees schools use Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Additional Needs Plans (ANPs), provision maps, I-APDR's and My Support Plans (MSPs). more information about support plans can be found here - Support Plans (opens link in same window)
After reviewing the progress made after a certain time, consideration may be given to asking for help and advice from other professionals. This could include Kirklees Specialist Outreach team (opens link in new window)
The support that schools and nurseries can provide at this stage is known as the ’graduated approach’ Further information about the Graduated Approach can be found here. The Graduated Approach - Support above and beyond normal teaching (opens link in new window)
