Dietician (for children, young people and adults)

What do Dieticians do?

Dieticians provide advice and support to people with a variety of needs i.e. people with diabetes, coeliac disease and people who are over or underweight.

To get an appointment with a dietitian, your GP, consultant or practice nurse will send a referral to us containing information on your health and what type of nutritional advice they want us to discuss with you. Unfortunately, we cannot see you if you do not have a medical referral.

When we receive your referral, we will write to you asking you to contact us to make an appointment at a time and location most suitable to you. We have many clinics on the two hospital sites. Our letter will give you the choices which are available to you.

Dietitians are the only nutrition professionals who are registered with the Health care Professions Council and are governed by an ethical code to ensure they always work to the highest standard. Registered Dietitians assess, diagnose and treat diet related problems at both an individual and a wider public health level. We use the most up to date scientific and medical research and translate this into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate food choices.

The dietitian will ask about your usual diet and eating pattern, they will also ask about your health and any medicines you are currently taking. The dietitian will then agree an individual plan with you by giving suggestions and advice on how to improve your diet.  The plan is individually tailored and is aimed at helping you to make specific, realistic and achievable changes to your diet.  At the end of the session, we will discuss with you the arrangements for your next appointment if this is required.

Speak with your GP, consultant or practice nurse about this service, they can make a referral to the dietician service.
