Platform 1
Platform 1, St George's Square, Huddersfield HD1 1JFAll about us
We support people from all backgrounds and experiences, that have, for whatever reason have refused to engage with other services. We encourage recovery through various activities, allowing them to recover at their own pace and within a safe and non-judgmental environment.
Our Aim
At Platform 1, we understand that life can be complicated- that’s why we provide tailored assistance to each individual to help with a wide variety of issues and complex needs. Originally just for men, we now cater to men, women and young adults who have often found it difficult to engage with other services. Through on-site support in our relaxed hub at Huddersfield Train Station, we help to give people the practical and emotional skills needed for recovery. Our services provide choices and opportunities for individuals to create meaningful and sustainable change. A holistic approach is important to us and at the core of how we work, and we do everything we can to make sure our members are comfortable asking for help when they need it.
So, what can we offer?
Outreach:
Making our members feel connected and supported, from welfare calls and food parcels to crisis appointments and video calls.
On site:
At our main hub, we have a number of activities available to build skills, confidence, and social bonds. The activities are member run, where they can pass on their skills by engaging in cascade learning. From wood working, to planting flowers and harvesting vegetables in our garden, bike maintenance, board games, arts & crafts, having a read of one of the books from our little library, or perhaps just having a hot drink and a chat with our other members.
We have recently acquired a new carriage and hope to offer IT skills and basic cooking skills in the near future too.
Crisis Line:
We provide a crisis line for those who are really struggling, perhaps with thoughts of suicide or self-harm.
Welfare:
Our fantastic welfare team are experienced with practical issues such as housing applications, making GP appointments, helping with benefits forms, CV writing and banking, and can also provide emotional support in a private environment away from the social carriage. We can also advocate for our members, joining them for appointments they might find daunting or confusing.
Counselling:
Our qualified counsellors work tirelessly to ensure that every person that comes to them feels heard and understood. While our welfare team deals with the practical aspects of an issue, our counsellors can concentrate on the emotional and mental aspects. From mental health issues, abuse, past and present relationships, bereavement, life changes such as a new job or moving to a new area, thoughts of suicide or self-harm, feelings of isolation- our counsellors provide a private and safe space to talk, and endeavour to be compassionate, empathetic, and down to earth.
