Public consultation on proposed new building for Joseph Norton Academy

Kirklees Council and Wellspring Academy Trust are working in partnership to create a purpose built special school for Joseph Norton Academy, with 132 places for children and young people, who have an Education Health and Care Plan with Social, Emotional and Mental health (SEMH) difficulties.
Joseph Norton Academy currently offers 63 places from a site in Scissett. The pupils enjoy the semi-rural location and the curriculum has been enhanced by the addition of a school farm, but the buildings are dated, with any further developments being restricted due to the site, and the children travel a significant distance to attend school.
The preferred site for the replacement new school is land that was formerly home to The Deighton Centre, which is central to the borough. Our intention is to apply for planning permission in the coming weeks, but we are very keen to hear your views on the project first.

The development will create additional special school places for pupils aged 4-18 years, Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 5, within a high quality, fit for purpose building that can support the wide range of needs of pupils and introducing co-education opportunities for a wider age range.
Work is due to commence in the spring of 2024, with build completion expected winter 2025/2026.
We would like to invite you to a public consultation drop-in at which you are welcome to view the proposal, ask questions and give us your feedback. There is no need to book, just come at the time
that suits you best.
