Project Search

A transition-to-work programme for students with learning disabilities or autism.

Parent from 2022/2023 cohort

"I always worried what she would do in the future in terms of a job, but now she's on Project SEARCH, I don't worry anymore."

Project SEARCH is a one-year internship programme for students between ages 18 -25 with a learning disability or autism.

Project Search offers internships at Dewsbury & District Hospital and also in Kirklees Council, both of these have lots of different work options.

It is targeted for students whose goal is competitive employment within the local community.  Opportunities on the programme are varied and can include customer service, hospitality & catering, maintenance & gardening and business support.

Students participate in three internships, otherwise known as 'rotations', to explore a variety of different career paths and are supported by a skills tutor and job coach.

What does Project Search offer?

  • Real-life work experience to develop employability skills
  • Increased independence, confidence and self-esteem
  • Individualised on-the-job coaching and daily feedback sessions
  • Building personal and professional relationships
  • Participation in tutor-lead training including employment skills and life skills.

The Project SEARCH Philosophy:

People with disabilities have the right to choose a path towards education and employment.  However, whilst the freedom of choice is given, the right to work is earned. Earning the right to work is dependant upon the student's preparation.

Project Search Intern at Dewsbury Hospital as a Domestic Ward Assistant

"I am really enjoying my placement.  The whole team are so inspiring, working hard to treat the patients.  They always keep positive and friendly and make time to help me.

My favourite part about the role is talking to patients and making them smile.  I am always proud when I can say I've done my job well and the ward is fully stoked for the team"
