Education for young people who are too ill to attend school (Medical Tuition)

Children may experience ill health at some point during their time at school and others may have an ongoing medical condition that potentially impairs their ability to access education in school. In the majority of cases, schools are able to support pupils in such circumstances effectively.

Department for Education guidance (opens pdf in new window) outlines how, in more exceptional cases, support can be made available in order to minimise disruption to a child’s education, where their needs cannot be met by the school.

Kirklees Council has the overall responsibility for the education of children with health and medical needs who cannot attend school.

In Kirklees, Medical Tuition is provided by Greater Heights Academy Trust, which as 45 places available for medical tuition.

This service is accessed by a referral from the mainstream school and must be supported by medical advice from a consultant. Support is usually on a short term basis, with the child remaining single registered with their mainstream school. The aim of this provision is, where possible, to support the pupil towards reintegration back into mainstream education when they are well enough. This is done at the earliest opportunity, working closely with the school, the pupil, parents/carers and other professionals.

Schools or the Local Authority are responsible for making referrals to Alternative Providers (which includes Medical Tuition)

You should speak with your school about AP's first as they are able to make referrals for a young person to attend an AP.

Kirklees Inclusion Multi Agency Panel (IMAP)

Schools are able to seek alternative provision/support to help meet the needs of the young people on their roll if they are not able to offer this support themselves. This is often a temporary arrangement.

Kirklees Local Authority has contracted various Alternative provisions to be able to provide a different approach for our young people when this need is identified.

A panel has been established where opportunities for support to families and children can be considered. This panel is called the Inclusion Multi Agency Panel ( IMAP). A referral to this panel may lead to Alternative Provision placement or advice around support and links to other agencies.

In Kirklees we are excited by the prospect of having this multi-agency approach in place. We hope to best serve our Kirklees families through meaningful and productive collaborations to genuinely make the difference.

Children that are on a school roll can access support from IMAP through referrals made by their school.

If you are a parent of a child not on a school roll and would like to contact the panel please use the following email address IMAP@kirklees.gov.uk
