All about us

The adult autism service is a specialist service dedicated to supporting people who are seeking a new diagnostic assessment. We offer a comprehensive specialist diagnostic assessment that includes a full medical and social history and uses validated diagnostic instruments as recommended by NICE. The service is for people who are 18 years or above and do not have a learning disability.

Our office base is Manygates Clinic in Wakefield, however, we use a number of community bases in Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Halifax and Barnsley.
Referral criteria

Our service is for adults who are 18 or above, who do not have a learning disability.

Adults with a learning disability can receive support from specialist learning disability services.  Under 18’s can be referred to local children’s services. More information and forms can be found on the webiste.

Right to Choose

Right to choose means that once a person has been referred for specialist treatment, they have the Right to choose which hospital, clinic, or practitioner provides that specialist treatment.  This includes choosing private hospitals, clinics, and practitioners.

In Kirklees, the right to choose applies only once it has been determined that it is clinically appropriate for a patient to be referred.  The ICB has commissioned the South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust (SWYPFT) Neurodevelopmental Assessment Service to triage referrals. Following triage, if accepted for assessment, a letter will be provided to take to your GP if you would like to take the right to choose a different provider.

For up-to-date information about Right to Choose, please go to the West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership Patient Choice (Right to Choose) page (opens link in new window)

This page includes an FAQ section that can answer many questions about Right to Choose - Right to Choose FAQ's (opens link in new window)

Independent and Private Assessments

There are various independent services available (which you will have to pay for) which can provide assessments for ADHD, ADD and Autism.

We have some services in the Local Offer Services directory, and you can also search online for them.  We do not recommend any service - Local Offer Services directory (opens link in same window)

You can find more about Private Assessments on this Autism UK page - Autism UK Assessments information (opens link in new window)
