Referrals to the neurodevelopmental assessment service can be made by any professional (such as Education staff, SENDCo, GP, Health Visitor, Speech and Language Therapist etc) who knows the child well and has a good understanding of their needs. This referral is done by calling 01484 343184 to book an appointment for a telephone consultation.

Following the telephone consultation, if the referral is accepted the clinician will advise the referrer of the current waiting time for a full assessment if they would like to join the waiting list. At this point Right to Choose might apply.

If declined, the reasons will be explained to the referrer with information about what needs to happen next.

The neurodevelopmental assessment service will send a letter confirming the outcome of the referral and accepted referrals may be added to the waiting list. Detailed information about the assessment process is provided to families once they have been accepted onto the waiting list.

The assessment will take place and a detailed report will be issued to the parent/carer/young person with the outcome. A follow up call to discuss this in detail will be scheduled at an appropriate time.

As a young person turns 18 years old, the neurodevelopmental assessment service will transfer the young person to Adult Services.

Right to Choose

Right to choose means that once a person has been referred for specialist treatment, they have the Right to choose which hospital, clinic, or practitioner provides that specialist treatment.  This includes choosing private hospitals, clinics, and practitioners.

In Kirklees, the right to choose applies only once it has been determined that it is clinically appropriate for a patient to be referred.  The ICB has commissioned the South West Yorkshire Partnership Foundation Trust (SWYPFT) Neurodevelopmental Assessment Service to triage referrals. Following triage, if accepted for assessment, a letter will be provided to take to your GP if you would like to take the right to choose a different provider.

There are various independent services available (which you will have to pay for) which can provide assessments for ADHD, ADD and Autism.
