Have your say on school proposals

Plans to increase support for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) have moved on to the next stage, providing another chance for people to have their say.

The proposals are based on investing in local education and increasing the amount of SEND support in the district’s mainstream schools. This is a key part of our work to transform SEND services.

We are looking to provide targeted and specialist support so that those who need it are able to make sustained progress in a mainstream setting.

What do the proposals include?

Proposals include new ‘Additionally Resourced Provisions’ at a range of existing schools across Kirklees. They would be for children and young people with: Complex Communication and Interaction Needs; Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs; and Cognition and Learning Needs.

What are the next stages?

A consultation took place and this feedback has been taken into account. The next step, which is the publication of legal notices, has now taken place so that people have another chance to have their say.

The legal notices only apply to schools which are maintained by the local authority, with academies following a separate process.

Specifically, the notices seek views on proposals to establish new Additionally Resourced Provision for Complex Communication and Interaction needs at Netherhall St James CE (VC) Infant and Nursery School, Netherhall Learning Campus Junior School and Netherhall Learning Campus High School.

We are also consulting on proposals to remove the registered Additionally Resourced Provision for Physical Impairment at Netherhall St James CE (VC) Infant and Nursery School and Netherhall Learning Campus Junior School, which has not been operational for two years due to a different approach being taken in supporting children in local schools.

The academies following their own processes, which are happening in partnership with the council, are Beaumont Primary Academy, Carlinghow Academy and Old Bank Academy. If approved, all of these schools would provide new Additionally Resourced Provisions for children with additional needs.

If the proposals are agreed, there would be an overall increase in the number of Additionally Resourced Provision school places.

The consultation will run until November 28 and full details can be found via our school organisation and planning web page.
